talk about job interviewing

I was a guest on a radio show recently talking about ow to use your selling skills to get a job. I found it interesting how it is so similar to sales…and life.
1) Network. Use the contacts that you have to let them know you are looking and what you are looking for. be specific and get out there.
2) Set up one-on-one meetings with people that you know. Get coffee, a drink etc. Help people understand what you are looking for and give examples of the type of organizations and job descriptions. Again be specific. People cant think for you even thought you think they can.
3) When applying for a job do something unique. Sending a resume is so last century. A few things I would suggest. Be different. One way is send your information (resume if you must) in a different and unique way. For example I was once applying for a job with Proctor and Gamble. I was in college (about 100 years ago) and the career center had the interviews set up but P and G was booked up quickly. So I called ahead and found out who was coming and the sales director and took my resume, silk-screened it onto a tee shirt and rolled it up into a colgate toothpaste box and mailed them signature required. Got the interview!
4) When you are on the interview do lots of research. Research on the company, on the interviewer, etc. Then create lots of questions to ask them as well. Questions about the organizations vision, what customers/clients say about them, what competitors say about them and don’t forget some questions to the interviewer about them, their experience with the company, what they like best about the organization, their job etc. This gives lots of good insite to how the employees feel and shows you have a real interest in them not just you.
